year 12 chemistry trip

Our Year 12 Chemists explore the science of what's possible at Waters!

Yesterday, our Year 12 Chemistry students took advantage of a fantastic opportunity to visit Waters in Wilmslow.

Waters are leaders in the field of the design and manufacture of scientific software and instruments, including liquid chromatography, precision chemistry, informatics and software, material characterisation, and mass spectrometry.

Year 12 began the day with a guided tour, where they got a fascinating insight into the research, development and manufacturing side of the business, particularly mass spectrometry, the instrumentation that facilitates the identification and quantification of compounds or separate compounds by mass, charge, shape, and size for structural elucidation of proteins and peptides.

Our students then engaged in a CSI workshop to practise using spectroscopic techniques to solve real life problems.

They concluded their visit by participating in a ‘Speed Dating’ workshop with employees of Waters, which was a great opportunity to hear all about the varied careers available at Waters, to gain a greater understanding of their job roles, and to ask more questions.

It was a fantastic and inspiring experience for all, with huge thanks to Waters for welcoming our students, to Mr Kennedy-Fowler for the photographs, and to all the staff who supported the trip.
