national language competition

Year 9 MFL representatives from each House compete!

This week has marked the launch of the NLC (National Language Competition) 2024, which is a virtual competition for Year 9 Languages students, organised by GCHQ.

Our Year 9 MFL students are keen to compete and to represent not only UGS, but each of their respective houses, and Head of Languages Mr Bridge has orchestrated their participation. Four of our competitors: Matthew 9T, Cole 9T, Joe 9R and Adam 9R are pictured above making an early start!

As Mr Bridge explains:

Each house has entered a team of up to 4 students, and they have until Friday evening to solve as many language-based puzzles and to score as many points as possible on the Arena platform.

Classroom L2 is available each lunchtime this week for the purpose, but students can also work on it in their own time too.

The competition doesn't require particular knowledge of any language, but students' proficiency in French and German will certainly help them to spot patterns and crack codes.

Early indications suggest that Mersey House is leading, but all is still to play for!

We look forward to sharing updates on how our linguists progress: watch this space!
