sociology quiz winners

Our younger students enjoy the opportunity to explore this fascinating subject!

UGS is proud to offer and deliver A level Sociology to our Sixth Form students and this well-respected field is a popular choice; in a brand new initiative for this year, our Sociology department has launched weekly quizzes and news articles for our younger students, and the chance to meet with our current cohort of Sociology students.

The first of the winners of the new weekly Sociology quiz are pictured above after proudly receiving their prize this morning: Diane 9R, Asfer 8R, and Ayla 7R. Also congratulations to Anabel 8U.

Here Sociology teacher Miss Matthews provides the context for this great new opportunity to learn for our students:

Sociology is a fascinating subject that you can study in our Sixth form. We look at a range of topics and issues in society, including Crime and Media.

It is a valuable subject to study if you are considering a career in Law or Journalism, and many of our Sociology alumni have gone on to study these disciplines at university and then to pursue them professionally.

The weekly quizzes and articles that our KS3 and 4 students now have the opportunity to engage with have so far included:

  • Ever wondered what Sociology is? One area of Sociology is the study of crime. Do you know what % of the UK prison population is male and what % is female? Why do you think that there might be this gender difference?
  • Debating a mobile phone ban in schools: you may have read about how many people are fighting for a ban on mobile phones in schools. One of the topics we study in A level Sociology is the impact of the media on our society. What do you think? Contribute your ideas on whether you believe mobile phones should be banned in schools, and try and have a balanced argument to see if you can see both sides.

Really well done to our winners, and we look forward to sharing updates moving forward; with huge thanks to Miss Matthews and the department for sharing this insight into the study of Sociology at UGS.
