world of work day

A full day's programme of workshops prepare Year 11 for their professional futures

Our Careers department were delighted yesterday to welcome a huge number of visiting speakers and representatives from a wide field of professions (some of whom were former UGS students) to deliver practical and interactive workshops to Year 11 on preparing for their next steps, and on maximising upon all the opportunities available to them to further their career aspirations, and to find and develop routes into their chosen professions.

Year 11 rotated in forms between workshops in:

Careers Speed Networking

This presented Year 11 with a fantastic opportunity to meet and talk with a variety of people from different professions, and to learn more about their career and the route they took into it.

The careers represented by our visiting guests included:

Advanced Clinical Practitioner; Architect; Biomedical Scientist; Commercial Manager; Early Careers Advisor; Engineer; Financial Advisor; Head of Digital Client Services; HR Manager; Journalist; Lawyer; Paramedic; Programming and Partnerships Officer; Radio Producer; Recruitment Consultant; School Liaison Officer; Social Worker; Software Engineer; Technical Adviser (Healthcare); Technical Operational Lead (Pharmacy); and Urban Planner.

Year 11 were tasked with guessing the job role of each representative, and it was a fantastic chance to test their knowledge of the professional fields.

It also presented a great opportunity to ask questions, find out more, and build confidence in speaking with potential employers.

A great concept that was fast-paced, interactive, of great benefit to the students, not to mention lots of fun!

Key Employability Skills and the Interview Process delivered by The Enrichment Partnership

This workshop focused on supporting students in preparing for college, HE, apprenticeships, and employment interviews. They were introduced to different styles of interview that may be encountered as part of a variety of different recruitment processes.

CV planning delivered by the Manchester College

This workshop allowed students to examine what a good CV looks like and to get top tips for creating a CV that will impress future employers.

Solving Problems with Teamwork delivered by Our Futures

In this workshop, students learnt and developed employability skills centred around working with others.

Introduction to Apprenticeships delivered by GMLPN

In this workshop, students received an overview of apprenticeships with a focus on post-18 apprenticeships, including degree apprenticeships. The second part of the workshop allowed students to register on the Find an Apprenticeship website, and gave them the opportunity to ask specific questions about how apprenticeships can support their career aspirations.

A truly rewarding, informative, and practically insightful day for Year 11, and we were delighted to receive so much positive feedback from our visitors about our students' enthusiastic and intelligent engagement with the workshops.

With huge thanks to all the visiting representatives for giving their time to inspire our students, and to Mrs Kinder and Miss Marshall for organising this wonderful opportunity for all.
