year 12 students attend mun conference

Our MUN students take part in a full day of debates

The UGS 6th Form MUN (Model United Nations) Club launched earlier this year, and a cohort of our Year 12 students have been meeting weekly for this extracurricular and enrichment opportunity.

Today, they are pictured above and below attending WiMUN, their first official conference, where they were able to put their skills and comprehension of world-wide ethical issues into practice.

WiMUN was hosted at Withington Girl's School, and as you can see, our students proudly represented UGS, taking part in a full day's programme of debates, involving over 300 delegates from 18 schools.

As detailed on the United Nations website, the premise of MUN is to enable and facilitate the engagement of students with the UN's goals and objectives.

Participation in the simulations and debates supports a student's personal, academic, ethical and professional development, and is hugely positively impactful to the pathways that they aim to pursue:

Model UN simulations engage hundreds of thousands of students each year, helping them to learn more about the principles of the UN and how it functions. Many of today’s leaders in law, government, business and the arts – including at the UN itself – participated in Model UN as students.

The United Nations supports Model UN simulations by building and maintaining strong links between the UN and Model UN participants. It does this by sharing first-hand knowledge about the work of the UN at Model UN conferences; providing guidance with organisers to create accurate and authentic simulations; and encouraging Model UN clubs to take concrete action to support UN values and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Really well done all, we can't wait to see what's next!
