engineering careers talk
Delighted to welcome Engineering Manager & former student to inspire our students!
Yesterday, as our Year 9 Options Day took place, our Careers department, as part of their ongoing provision and lunchtime Careers Café series of presentations from visiting speakers, was delighted to welcome Dominic Bain, Engineering Manager of global company Amentum, who is a former UGS student.
Students from Years 9-13 who aspire to pursue a career in the sector were keen to attend, and Dominic shared his personal journey into the profession, from studying GCSEs and A levels here at UGS, after which he secured a place at Durham University to study for the 4 year MEng in General Engineering (New & Renewable Technologies). On graduating and qualifying, Dominic then began his career as an Electrical Engineer, progressing to Senior EC&I Engineer, Operations Manager, and now Engineering Manager.
Dominic delivered an engaging and insightful presentation to our students, that firstly highlighted the many successful, famous and historically significant national and international engineers.
He shared with our students the many facets and fields of engineering, including Mechanical, Civil, Structural, Electrical, Electronic, Chemical and Software engineering, and the ways in which the profession contributes significantly to a number of areas: space, sports, the arts and cosmetics.
Dominic guided our students through routes into careers in the field, including apprenticeships and study at university, and the different subjects that can facilitate these routes, such as Maths and Physics.
The presentation culminated with the many reasons why engineering is such a great career choice: the profession is in high demand, offers great prospects and salaries, job security, and contributes enormously to society and culture.
Finally, our students enjoyed the opportunity to ask questions and to find out more about their specific areas of interest.
With huge thanks to Dominic for giving his time to visit and inspire our aspiring engineers, and to the Careers department for organising this wonderful opportunity for our students.
