crest award presentations day 2

More of our Year 8 & 9 scientists deliver their research!

On Tuesday, we enjoyed the first instalment of presentations from our Crest Award scientists in Years 8 & 9 (see earlier report); and at lunchtime today, in a packed S5, our dedicated Science lecture theatre, it was time to hear from the remainder of our scientists, starting with Asfer 8R (pictured below) on Why Investigate Fingerprints?

Asfer delivered a fascinating account of his research, experimentation and findings, that, like the work of all our other CREST award scientists, met the criteria to produce scientific projects that demonstrate independence, proactivity, and enthusiasm; and that develop and progress the students`investigative, reflective, and evaluative skills.

Kiara 8U (lead picture and below) then presented on Cervical Cancer screening and the HPV vaccine, and the positive impact of both on preventing death from the disease.

Kirishika and Zoya 8U (below) presented on the Science of the Perfect Cup of Tea (who knew?) and delivered the findings of their extensive investigations, concluding that although ultimately science conceded defeat to personal preference, Yorkshire Tea appeared to come out on top (as a die-hard Twinings devotee, I struggle to accept this outcome)!

Finally, Arwen 9U and Theo 8U presented on Wind Turbines, their advantages and disadvantages, their design and structure, the pros and cons of colour differentiation, and the costing of maintaining this power supply:

Our scientists fielded questions from the audience with intelligence and humour, and their passion for their projects resonated with all.

With thanks to our amazing students for all their hard work and for sharing their findings with us on Tuesday and today; and, as Dr Richards observed, huge thanks to the Science staff who have supported this fantastic extracurricular project: Mrs Walsh, Mr Parker and our team of Science Technicians.

Well done all!
