This week our scientists transform milk into glue!
In another great week for Year 7 Science Club, it was time to get experimental and to work together to develop the strongest glue that they could from milk, vinegar and sodium hydrogen carbonate ... otherwise known as that staple of any good baker's cupboard: baking powder!
The students were tasked with decanting their mixture through cloth into a conical flask and separating out the excess liquid from the curds, before placing them in a new cup and adding more water to produce a smooth mixture.
The final stage was to add the baking powder, before checking that the mixture was neutral using indicator paper. Our scientists then got to enjoy the end product of all their hard work and to utilise their very own handmade glue to stick together paper strips to make a chain.
With huge thanks as always to Science Club leaders Mrs Walsh and Dr Bethell, and to Mrs Yarwood and Mr Sharp, for facilitating this wonderful extracurricular opportunity for our students.
Next week, in a fun festive finale to the term, Science Club will be making seasonally-themed petri dishes. We can't wait!
