year 9 battlefields trip

Our students visit France & Belgium for impactful WW1 History trip

On Wednesday, a cohort of our Year 9 History students set off from Urmston to board the ferry to Calais for our annual trip to visit the sites and locations of profound historical and cultural significance, and to pay their respects at this time of Remembrance.

After an early evening arrival in Albert, yesterday was spent in visits to museums and trench sites in the Somme area. This included: Musee Somme, a demonstration of weapons and uniform, and a visit to Ulster Tower.

Year 9 also visited Thiepval Wood trenches, the Thiepval memorial and museum, and Lochnager Crater.

Today, they have visited Sanctuary Wood trenches and museum; in addition to Flanders Field museum for a workshop on medical care in the trenches, a topic that they will study for GCSE.

Our students have also visited Hooge Crater museum, had a guided tour of the bunkers, and paid their respects at Tynecot cemetery.

Finally, they attended the poignant Last Post ceremony at Menin Gate.

Year 9 have truly impressed staff and their hosts with their respectful engagement with the opportunities presented to them on this trip, and it is clear how much the impactful, enriching experience has resonated with all of our students.

We wish them all a safe journey back, with huge thanks to the staff supporting our students and who make these opportunities possible.
