reading reward trip

Celebrating our House Reading Champions 2024 with a special trip to the Bookshop!

We have been delighted with the high levels of engagement with reading and literacy demonstrated by our students this year, and with their enthusiasm not only for selecting and reading a great many titles from our library and e-book platform, but for their participation in all the Literacy events and initiatives that have taken place over the last year, from House reading challenges, to author visits, creative writing competitions, all the events for World Book Day week, and our recent Book Fair.

As we near the end of term, we are therefore proud to nominate our ultimate House Reading Champions for 2024, who are pictured above: Yasasvi 7S, Arkar 8M, Kelvin 7S, Thomas 8M, Mariyah 7S, Aline 7R, Sophie 7S, Natalia 7T, Asfer 7R and Marianne 9U.

It was our pleasure to invite them to take part in a reward trip to the fabulous Urmston Bookshop, as pictured, where they were able to choose not only a new book each for themselves, but to help Ms Longden and Miss Hammond select a range of exciting new titles for our Library, from the well-stocked shelves of new releases, bestsellers, fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and manga and graphic novels.

It was a fantastic experience for all, a really superb way to end another great year of reading at UGS, and not even the heavy rain could dampen our spirits, or our bags of books!

As Literacy Lead Miss Hammond observes: "Myself and Ms Longden are so impressed by the enthusiasm these students have demonstrated for the wide range of books that they have read this year ... and in choosing not only a book for themselves as a reward, but also a title for the school library, they are contributing to encouraging others at UGS to read more too. The students were a credit to our school, and thoroughly enjoyed the time to explore new reads".

We know that the students will enjoy their new books, and we cannot wait to showcase all the other new titles on our shelves.

With huge thanks to Sandra at Urmston Bookshop for so warmly welcoming us today, and for all her help with our choices!
