our students excel in uk biology challenge 2024

Celebrating our high-achieving Biologists who secured national top-ranking!

Pictured above this morning after receiving their certificates are just five of our students, out of over 200 from UGS, who recently competed in the UK Biology Challenge 2024.

Biology teacher Mrs Walsh, who organised UGS participation in this national challenge, is delighted to share the outstanding scores of our students, many of whom earned top-ranking placement. A phenomenal achievement as 45,400 students from schools across the UK competed!

In the lead photograph are our 2 students who achieved GOLD (top 5% nationally): Thomas (2nd left) and Cherie (4th left).

Also pictured: Leo (1st left) and Vanessa (5th left), just two of our Biologists who achieved SILVER (top national 15%); and Neve (centre), just one of our students to achieve BRONZE (top 30% nationally)

Here Mrs Walsh tells us more about the challenge and the amazing attainment of our scientists:

Our students sat the UK Biology Challenge in mid-May, and they had to complete 2 x 25 minute online tests. The questions are designed to test their Biology knowledge from lessons, and also their general knowledge, reasoning skills, and ability to complete calculations.

Over 200 of our students took part in the Challenge, and we are very proud of them! It is an amazing achievement that two of our students (Thomas and Cherie) achieved Gold Awards, putting them in the top 5% of the 45400 students who took part nationally!

In total, we secured 11 Silver Awards (top 15% nationally) and 30 Bronze Awards (top 30% nationally), with a great many of our students also achieving high commendation.

Congratulations to everyone who took part!
