Mathematics:

Painting Houses

On a new housing estate the houses are going to be painted on the outside.

The painter has just two colours of paint, yellow and green.
The painter must stick to these rules when he chooses his colours.

  1. Each floor has to be painted yellow or green.
  2. No house may have two green floors directly on top of one another.

For example, on a house with three floors

Investigate.

  1. How many different ways can a house be painted, according to the rules, if it has
    1. 1 Floor
    2. 2 Floors
    3. 3 floors
    4. 4 floors ?
  2. Write down the numbers you have found.
  3. Can you see a pattern?
  4. Can you use your pattern to predict how many ways there would be to paint a house with five floors?

Task.

  1. Present your findings as a poster on one side of A4 paper.
  2. Use diagrams and colours to make your work attractive.
  3. Bring your work to your first Maths lesson in September and hand it in to your Maths teacher.
  4. You will be given a certificate for completing the work and the best 10 in the year will be awarded a small prize.

Science:

Investigating tea bags

TB100111560545100.jpgLipton_Tea_Bags_JPEG.jpg

Try this out

  • Put a tea bag into a glass tumbler.
  • Put a cross in pencil on a piece of white paper and put your glass and tea bag on top of the cross.
  • Add water to your tea bag and stir until you can no longer see the cross.  Use hot water from the tap

Safety: make sure it is not too hot or it will scald.

You should have found how to do the experiment.
Are there any problems?  If so, try to solve them or ask someone else – this is called research.

Your challenge: can you extend this method to find out whether the shape, the brand or the type of tea affects how fast the tea dissolves?

Don’t buy lots of different types of tea!  Swap with friends, relatives and neighbours.

Think about

  • What you will need to measure
  • How you will make your experiment a fair test

You can make the experiment more reliable by repeating it and averaging the results.  To do this, add them together and divide by the number of times you have done the experiment. For example, if you do the experiment twice, add the two numbers together and divide by two.

Make a poster to display what you have done and what you have found out

Try to include the following

  • What you did
  • What you kept the same and why
  • Some pictures or diagrams or both
  • Your results clearly displayed in a table
  • What you found out
  • Any improvements you can suggest

Your work will be looked at in your science lessons in September and there will be a prize for the best ones

f1  Looking at Greek Food

f3f4f5
“A large scale study has backed the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet “

Source : New Scientist June 2003

The Mediterranean diet includes a wide variety of vegetables, fruit, cereals and olive oil.   Fish is a staple food in Greece.

Unscramble the words in the box below to help you to start to think about the type of foods/ingredients which are popular in Greece.

iveol  loi                                           reekg  lasda

etaf  heesce                                      klcab  liovse

foli  yrtsap                                      sadrnise

akamouss                                         mleno

kabebs                                            fhis

Now carry out your own further research to find out :-

  • Other types of foods which are eaten in the Greek diet
  • Some of the benefits of eating these foods  (e.g  are they low in fat ?)
  • Recipes used in Greek cooking

Present your information as a poster.  You may use pictures from magazines, information from the internet, look at products in supermarkets/restaurants or make some models of your own to attach to your work.
Be creative and let your imagination flow !!
The size should be no larger than 2 pieces of A4.  However you can attach information (e.g. folded menus/recipes which you have written)

Pita_Bread.jpgFancy an additional challenge ?

Design a pita pocket
Pita bread is often used as a ‘pocket’ for a sandwich.
Design your own pita pocket using a range of exciting ingredients.

Bring your work to your first Technology lesson and hand in to your teacher.
Earn your first credit at Urmston Grammar.  The best work will also receive   special awards.
In addition, if your pita pocket recipe is one of the best 3 recipes, you will be able to make your product (with the help of your new Food Technology teacher) and we shall take photographs of the winning designs.
